Acholi
Culture
The
Acholi people of Northern Uganda have a rich and diverse cultural heritage.
Most of it is expressed in a wide variety of dance and music genre that
have been passed down by our fore bearers over many generations.
Unfortunately culture has not been immune from the ravages of the Northern
Uganda conflict. Internal displacement and social degradation have wreaked
havoc on Acholi culture and threaten its very survival. This Kacoke Madit
(KM) initiative aims to contribute to the promotion of Acholi culture
by collecting, archiving and disseminating traditional music, dance and
stories through the internet and other media. By availing the material
to our people and other peoples of the world we will ensure that it is
preserved for posterity.
"Our culture underpins our traditional values and is the glue
that ensures social cohesion". It establishes our identity and
enhances intra-community harmony as well as peaceful co-existence with
people of other cultures.
