Kacoke Madit (KM) Resolutions

Preamble

WE the participants at the Kacoke Madit (KM)

ASSEMBLED in London from 5-6, April, 1997 at the Queen Mary and Westfield College, University of London, United Kingdom,

DEEPLY CONCERNED with the human tragedy in Acholiland resulting from the eleven years of armed conflict,

COGNISANT of the historic significance of this non-partisan, all inclusive conference aimed at seeking a peaceful solution to the war in Acholiland, addressing the humanitarian crisis, drawing a programme for post-war reconstruction and building consensus and unity in the community

FAITHFUL to the example of the best of our community who have strived and continue to strive towards peace, justice and the fundamentals of social and economic advancement

Having deliberated on the broad themes of unity, peace and development in Acholiland and Uganda,

AFFIRM our will,

To work tirelessly for peace and an end to the armed conflict in Acholiland

To build in our motherland a world desirous of liberty, peace and progress and to take our proper place in the affairs of Uganda side by side with the other nationalities in Uganda.

THEREFORE we do now resolve and declare as follows;

  1. To relentlessly pursue the search for lasting and durable peace in Acholiland.

  2. To commend the LRA/M for its declared intention at KM to resolve the conflict in Acholiland by peaceful means.

  3. To urge LRM/A to concretise its declared intention to settle the conflict in Acholiland by communicating the same to the Uganda Government unequivocally.

  4. To urge the Uganda government, in turn to reciprocate and resolve the conflict with the LRM/A by peaceful means.

  5. To urge an immediate cessation of hostilities by all parties to the conflict in Acholiland.

  6. To mobilise human and material resources for both immediate and long-term rehabilitation of Acholiland.

  7. To create a commission to encourage investment in Acholi.

  8. To set up a task force to follow up the KM resolutions.

  9. To develop and sustain Acholi unity and solidarity, every activity that promotes common understanding, togetherness, identity and trust must be undertaken with urgency

  10. To recommend the following;
    · Promote and strengthen our cultural heritage
    · Provide opportunity for teamwork.
    · KM continues to be a forum for the exchange of views and ideas.


  11. That KM takes place on the Easter weekend of 1998.
